Things to Do in Palmdale (California)

Palmdale is a city north of Los Angeles, in California. It is also part of what is know as The Antelope Valley. Palmdale and surrounding cities that is included in the antelope valley are Palmdale, Lancaster, Littlerock, Lake Los Angeles, and Sun Valley.

The city of Palmdale California is separated from the city of Los Angeles to the south by the San Gabriel Mountains. It’s the second largest city in Los Angeles County by land area and the 33rd most populous city in California. The township of Palmdale officially became the city of Palmdale in August of 1962, becoming the first in the Antelope Valley to incorporate. In 2009, Palmdale became a charter city. The Antelope Valley Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Palmdale, California, in the Antelope Valley. Opened in September 1990, its buildings take up around 1 million square feet. Its physical main building, parking lots, and ring road businesses encompass an area a bit less than 0.5 by 0.5 miles. This giant mall is Palmdale’s premier shopping destination, also featuring a 16-screen cinema complex. In all there are 140 stores and services at the Antelope Valley Mall, and the five anchor stores are Macy’s, JC Penney, and Dick’s Sporting Goods . A day of shopping can be work up an appetite, the mall has a food court, as well as a “restaurant row” with sit-down eateries like Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Firehouse Subs.

Dry Town Water Park is a waterpark located in Palmdale, California that opens each year from the Memorial Day weekend in May through Labor Day in September. The park features a 35-foot tower structure that holds three waterslides with a three foot deep splashdown pool, a second tower structure that holds a four-lane racer slide, a 6,000 square foot children’s water playground with three slides, spray features, and a giant overhead splash bucket, and a 925-foot lazy river that winds around the center of the park.

The Airpark was established to preserve the proud heritage of the Blackbird family of military aircraft. Through the restoration, preservation, and display of these unique aircraft, it provides the visiting public from all over the world with an interesting and educational experience.

The Blackbird Heritage Courtyard brick exhibit commemorates designers, crew members, and others associated with Blackbird aircraft’s development and mission execution during the Cold War years. Museum visitors are welcome to purchase bricks, inscribed with their names or the name of someone they wish to remember and/or honor, to be placed amongst the names of Blackbird pioneers such as Lockheed’s Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, CIA’s Allen Dulles, U-2’s first flight pilot Tony LeVier, A-12’s first flight pilot Lou Schalk, and SR-71’s first flight pilot Bob Gilliland.

Mulligan Family Fun Center is a recreational park located in Palmdale, with various activities for everyone to enjoy. The newest attraction is a three story tall rope course featuring a rope bridge. You can also enjoy a game of laser tag inside of a 2,200 square foot glow arena with special lighting and sound effects. Transplants Brewing Company has assembled a band of beer experts from across the country to produce Palmdale’s only craft beers. The brewing company comes out with a range of weird and wonderful ales, such as Cumber Some, wheat ale with strong notes of cucumber, of all things. Filbert meanwhile is brewed with hazelnut and chocolate, and Black Bayou is a dark ale enriched with roasted coffee beans. The tasting area here is a congenial bar with an open seating area, and you’re free to bring your own lunch or dinner from local take-outs to enjoy here with a glass of craft beer.

On the north-eastern edge of Palmdale is the United States Air Force Plant 42, where many of the US Air Force’s aircraft have been manufactured and tested since the 30s. You don’t need to be an aviation enthusiast to enjoy the Joe Davies Airpark, which showcases Plant 42’s remarkable heritage. Free to the public, the display comprises 21 planes that have come through Plant 42. Craft here include a Convair B-58A Hustler, a Lockheed F-104A Starfighter and Northrop X-4, all from the early years of jet aviation after the Second World War. A newer addition is the state-of-the-art F-22 Raptor, introduced in 2005.

The Antelope Valley Indian Museum State Historic Park is a state historic park of California, United States, interpreting Native American cultures of the Great Basin and surrounding regions. The park and its grounds are situated on the Antelope Valley’s rural east side in northern Los Angeles County, California. The museum contains the combined collections of H. Arden Edwards and subsequent owner and anthropology student Grace Oliver. The exhibits represent and interpret Native Americans groups, both aboriginal and contemporary, of the Southwest, Great Basin, and Californian cultural regions. A number of the artifacts on display are rare or one-of-a-kind items. The museum was originally constructed by homesteader/artist H. Arden Edwards in 1928. The chalet-style structure was built over the rock formation of Piute Butte in the Mojave Desert. The unusual folk art structure, originally used as a home, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Adjacent to Highway 14 between Avenues K and L, Sgt. Steve Owen Memorial Park is a hub of community activity. From national softball tournaments and city events to company picnics to family reunions and children’s birthday parties, you’ll always find something happening at this tree-lined park that encompasses more than 63 acres. Formerly named Lancaster City Park, the Lancaster City Council approved the renaming of the park on October 25, 2016 to honor the memory and legacy of Sgt. Steve Owen, who died in the line of duty October 5, 2016 when responding to a burglary call. Sgt. Owen is known for his many contributions to our community and the larger Antelope Valley. He gave of his time unconditionally to local sports programs, his church, colleagues, special events, and family. His love for his family and community was paramount in his life.
